Germany´s oldest HipHop Festival SPLASH! had it´s 20th anniversary last weekend – so it was time to party. Things have changed though and it´s not really about all four elements of HipHop anymore with breakdance and beatbox battles around every corner like it was 15 to 20 years ago. Rap and everything around it has evolved and this is great to see, even though the kids are not B-Boys, but Chabos. But guys like Savas or Marteria have had more than 10 Splash! gigs each, icons like NAS are still around and the new heroes like RIN get those kids to move with their trap beats.
But enough talk about the good old times. There was Graffiti – and not just a little. Guys like CAN2, SLIDER, OMSK167, TASSO, RICO79, INSANE51 and TONES painted a huge production right on the festival ground – awesome work and both thumbs up! But on top of this the organizers of the festival came up with another and totally new idea: an old industrial building was transformed into a trainstation. On a huge LED screen you were able to see painted trains passing by every five minutes. Trains which had beed rolling in Europe in the last 20 years. And they even had a timetable so that spotting was made easy. Let me tell you – this was definitely THE SHIT for all the graff heads out there.
Inside the “trainstation” HERAKUT, MR.CENZ, GHETTOFEVER and ourselves – TEAM HOMBOOG – were able to paint a huge mural each. What an honor. And trainwriting legend JEPSY himself even painted a small panel on the rebuild Interregio train. On top of that workshops and podium discussions were held.
So it was an awesome experience with great weather, an amazing vibe and a crowd going crazy. Those kids know how to party.
Happy Birthday SPLASH! – we are ready for the next 20 years of HipHop.
